Jakarta is one of Southeast Asia’s most creative cities, and its pottery scene has exploded over the past few years. Whether you are looking for a relaxing weekend activity, a meaningful date idea, a team-building experience for your office, or simply want to learn a timeless craft — pottery classes in Jakarta are now easier to find than ever.
But not all studios are the same. In this guide, we walk you through everything you need to know about taking a pottery class in Jakarta: what to expect on your first visit, the different techniques on offer, what to wear, how to choose the right studio for your needs — and why Niiliving has become one of the city’s most loved creative spaces since opening in 2021.
Why Take a Pottery Class in Jakarta?
Pottery is one of the oldest art forms in human history, and there is a reason it keeps growing in popularity in modern cities. Working with clay is genuinely meditative. The moment your hands touch the wheel or press into a slab of clay, everything else fades away. Many students describe their first pottery class as the most present — the most “in the moment” — they have felt in months.
Beyond relaxation, pottery gives you something tangible: a handmade object that carries the mark of your hands. No two pieces are ever identical. That uniqueness is the whole point.
Here are the most common reasons people book pottery classes in Jakarta:
- A creative outlet that feels completely different from screen-based hobbies
- A social experience — pottery is excellent for friend groups, couples, and colleagues
- A mindfulness practice — the tactile nature of clay is genuinely calming
- Learning a real, lasting skill over multiple sessions
- Creating a handmade piece to keep, gift, or display at home
Types of Pottery Classes Available in Jakarta
When searching for pottery classes in Jakarta, you will encounter several different techniques and formats. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right experience.
Wheel Throwing
This is the technique most people picture when they think of pottery — the spinning wheel, the rising walls of clay. Wheel throwing takes patience and practice. Your first few attempts will probably collapse (that is completely normal and also very funny). But once you feel the clay respond to your hands, it becomes genuinely addictive. Most beginner sessions produce small bowls, cups, or cylinders.
Handbuilding
Handbuilding does not use a wheel at all. Instead, you shape clay directly using your hands, simple tools, slabs, or coils. Handbuilding classes tend to be more relaxed and accessible for complete beginners, and they are excellent for creating more sculptural, irregular forms. Many of Niiliving’s signature pieces — including our sgraffito matcha bowls — begin with handbuilding techniques.
Sgraffito
Sgraffito is a decorative technique where a surface layer of coloured slip (liquid clay) is applied to the piece, then scratched away to reveal a contrasting layer beneath. The result is detailed, graphic illustrations etched directly into the surface of the ceramic. Niiliving has become known in Jakarta for its sgraffito work — each piece telling a small story through its carved illustrations.
Korean Clay Flower
Korean clay flower is a separate discipline from traditional pottery. Using a specially formulated lightweight air-dry clay, students create hyper-realistic floral arrangements that are painted and assembled into decorative pieces. Niiliving holds an official Korean Certificate Association qualification for clay flower — one of very few studios in Indonesia to do so — and offers both hobby classes and a certified master class track.
What to Expect at Your First Pottery Class in Jakarta
First-time pottery students often arrive a little nervous. Here is what typically happens so you know what to expect:
- You will be given an apron. Wear clothes you are comfortable getting muddy — clay stains are part of the experience.
- Your instructor will demonstrate the technique you are learning before you touch the clay.
- You will work with your own lump of clay and attempt the technique yourself. There will be guidance throughout.
- At the end of the session, your instructor will help you finish and trim your piece.
- Your piece will be set aside to dry, then bisque-fired in the kiln over the following days.
- After firing, it is glazed (coloured) and fired a second time. This process typically takes 2–4 weeks total.
- You collect — or arrange shipping for — your finished piece once it is ready.
Niiliving Tip: Come hungry for the experience, not just the result. Your first piece may not be perfectly symmetrical — but the process of making it is where the real value lives. Many students fall in love with pottery after their very first session, regardless of what the finished piece looks like.
What to Wear to a Pottery Class
This is one of the most common questions first-timers ask. The honest answer: wear something you would not be heartbroken to ruin.
- Clay is wet and earthy. It will end up on your hands, arms, and quite possibly your clothes.
- Avoid white clothing, dry-clean-only fabrics, or anything with delicate embellishments.
- Comfortable, casual clothing works best — jeans, t-shirts, casual trousers.
- Roll up your sleeves before you start.
- Tie back long hair — especially for wheel throwing sessions.
- Studio aprons are provided, but they do not cover everything.
How to Choose a Pottery Studio in Jakarta
With more pottery studios opening across Jakarta, here are the key factors to consider before you book:
Class Size
Smaller class sizes mean more individual attention from the instructor. At Niiliving, we keep our sessions intentionally intimate so every student gets real hands-on guidance — not just a demonstration followed by solo struggle.
Studio Atmosphere
Pottery is a sensory experience. The studio environment matters. Is it clean and well-equipped? Does it feel welcoming? Is there natural light? Niiliving’s home studio in West Jakarta has been designed as a calm, creative space — the kind of place where you genuinely want to spend a few hours.
Instructor Credentials
Look for studios with instructors who are not just hobbyists but trained practitioners. Niiliving holds a Korean Certificate Association qualification for clay flower and has over four years of teaching experience across beginner, intermediate, and advanced tracks.
What Happens to Your Piece
A quality studio will have its own kiln and a clear process for firing and glazing your work. Ask about turnaround times and how you collect your finished piece.
Class Formats
Some studios offer drop-in single sessions only. Others, like Niiliving, offer structured programmes for those who want to progress — from fun beginner classes to a full Studio Program with fundamental training across multiple sessions.
